DIY Edinburgh Electrician

Most people will turn their hand to certain DIY jobs like painting and decorating, joinery work and even some plumbing. However, for those people who think that they can turn their hand to electrical work – think again. Every year in the UK there are fatalities and thousands injured from faulty electrics in the home.  Unsafe electrical installations lead to fires and electric shocks. Unless you understand what you are actually doing, it is not a good idea to try and save money by doing these types of jobs yourself.

  • Rewiring of your home. If you move into an old house, it is likely that you will need to have the wiring and fuse board upgraded. These are jobs can take a skilled engineer several days to do properly so they are not easy to do. In old houses, fuse boards can sometimes be decades old. It is recommended that a new fuse board be installed to meet the UK safety standards. After installation, there must be full testing of the system and this can only be undertaken by a skilled engineer.
  • Outside lighting installations. Water and electricity don’t mix so if you require outside lighting, it is always a good idea to get an electrician involved who understands what is required to make the installation safe in all types of weather.
  • Bathroom lighting and showers. As with outside installations, there is a real requirement to get a professional in to install any wiring for bathrooms. It is imperative that water or vapour will not cause any issues.
  • New socket installations. Whilst these might seem easy to install, there should be a full test of the circuits after installation to ensure that there is no overloading of the circuit.

Recommended Electricians

It is important to get recommendations or testimonials for the electrician you’ve chosen. There are ways to check whether they have proper qualifications. They can be NICEIC or SELECT certified which will provide confidence that they actually are professionals and have insurance.

Don’t cut corners when dealing with electricity, and get a professional in.
